A very dedicated and talented tutor
“Lucy has inspired Honey to strive to learn the piano.”
- Janie, Mum of Honey (10)
I won free lessons!
“I played the piano when I was younger, but hadn't played for almost 20 years. I looked on the web to find a local piano teacher, went to meet with and then chose Lucy. I was then lucky enough to win a month of lessons from the draw on her website, which was great. I am really enjoying the lessons. Lucy took time to find out what I wanted to achieve and she has been helping me improve my technique and to play confidently again. She is positive, patient and encouraging, but also very clear in her feedback and what I need to practice. I find this approach very helpful and it is helping me improve. I am really enjoying playing again and look forward to the lessons each week”
If you're looking to learn piano look no further!
“For those in the West Sussex area who are looking to learn piano in an in-depth yet practical way I can say with certainty that you have arrived. Lucy is an exceptional tutor who is incredibly patient and understanding with her students and will always teach you from where you are at. If you're like me and either struggle to progress due to a tight schedule or have other commitments Lucy will endeavour to help you with methods to get your practice done. Lucy will be firm and dedicated to make sure that you progress to your goals in a way that will push you to strive along side having fun. Lessons will cover piano practice and music theory. As an aspiring music producer both of these aspects have become invaluable to me not to mention almost instantly applicable (The evening after one lesson I wrote a melody in B major). Now we all have to start somewhere and foreknowledge is always welcome but whatever your skill level is you can and will learn from Lucy. So what are you waiting for?”
I respect the way she teaches
“My name is Helena and I'm a Spanish Classical, Regional and Flamenco Dance Performer and Professor IDB (1) CDET approved teacher. I started taking piano lessons with Lucy to enjoy a different art form from my own, something for me to sit down and enjoy. I have continued my piano lessons with Lucy, and not gone to anyone else as I respect the way she teaches. Lucy focuses on technique, correcting continually bad habits, ie: bad posture, hand positioning, by showing the correct angle to approach the keys for minimum movement, and not collapsing the hand onto the keys. It's the technique that takes you through your art, and if it's continually corrected, it makes for good playing and makes it easier as you progress. I also enjoy music theory which Lucy teaches alongside the playing - learning all about different scales, note tones etc. I would recommend Lucy Dorman to anyone wishing to take up piano lessons, whether it be for fun or for serious grades to take them to superb playing heights!”
Lucy communicates with children in a way not everyone can
“Lucy is fantastic and I have recommended her to many friends. She can rekindle that passion to learn piano on a low day and jazz up a lesson with a new piece of music or play something herself to inspire. There is no pressure on taking piano grades and she talked through the pros and cons with Georgia. Georgia decided to start and achieving a certificate has been given her a real boost of confidence. I have no hesitation in recommending Lucy.”
- Eve, Mum of Georgia (10)
I was taught piano in my teens but didn't get very far!
“Lucy bravely took me on as a 65 year old 'beginner'. Her teaching method and personal insights have helped me make good progress. Thanks, Lucy!”
I have seen a real improvement in my daughter's piano playing
“Lucy is a professional piano teacher who has the ability to motivate Eva. She sets realistic targets and is firm and enthusiastic about the piano and music. Thank you very much.”
- Kate, Mum of Eva (14)
We are very lucky she's our daughters piano teacher.
“My daughter has been learning piano with Lucy for four months. In this short time she has learnt a lot. I also like her teaching methods. Lucy has a lot of enthusiasm and knows how to inspire and engage. She exposes her students to classical music and concerts to get them interested.”
- Effie, Mum of Sophia (14)
Lucy has brought out Phoebe's flair for music
“Phoebe has been having lessons with Lucy now for just over 3 years and we're so pleased. She manages to inspire Phoebe, and also remain firm and set targets. My daughter had previously learnt keyboard at school but hadn't progressed very far, although this highlighted she had a musical ability. Her lessons have given Phoebe direction and re-iterated that if you want to learn music you need to practise! Lucy uses the Suzuki method to teach but is not completely rigid with this. Phoebe acheived Distinctions for her Grades 2,3,4 & 5 and is preparing for her Grade 5 Theory and Grade 6 practical exams this year. Lucy has brought out Phoebe's flair for music and she always comes out of lessons pepped up and raring to go.”
- George, Mum of Phoebe (15)
I have recommended Lucy to many friends
“Lucy teaches myself and my son and daughter, and we are all at different levels. She is very good at adapting the lesson to our individual ages and abilities and is very creative in her ideas to maintain our enthusiasm. They are doing really well and enjoy their lessons very much. I have recommended Lucy to many friends and will continue to do so.”
- Emma, Mum of Stanley (10) & Scarlet (12)
Both girls look forward to their lessons every week.
“Lucy teaches both of my daughters. She has a lovely manner with the children, keeping them on task & ensuring steady progress, but making the lessons fun. Lucy varies her styles of teaching and if either of them are struggling with anything she comes up with a creative solution & keeps them motivated. She always takes time to listen to our girls, taking an interest in them, yet maintains their focus during lessons. Both Anna and Abi achieved Merits in their Grade 1 & 2 exams. We feel that Lucy is an excellent piano teacher, who has never let us down.”
- Yolanda, Mum of Abi (7) & Anna (10)
She makes the lessons really interesting
“Lucy is a really great piano teacher because she is friendly and I have learnt a lot. I passed my Grade 1 with Merit and Grade 2 with Distinction. I really do recommend Lucy.”
- Edie (11)
She is a brilliant teacher!
“I think Lucy's a really good teacher, because she encourages me but makes sure I work hard too! She points out things I need to work on, but she's not too hard on me. She writes down things to remember to practise each week... so bring a notepad! I like going to her flat. The views are amazing! And her cat is fun and friendly.”
- Abi Clay, (8)
“I really enjoy going to piano lessons with Lucy!”
- Honey Pamment (aged 10)
“Lucy has a wonderful way of teaching and Olivia has learnt so much in her time with Lucy she is teaching the rest of us! I can't praise Lucy highly enough and would 100% recommend her.”
- Lucy O'Neill
A great teacher.
“I would highly recommend Lucy as a piano teacher and find her to be knowledgeable, enthusiastic and reliable. As an adult beginner, Lucy has helped me to understand that learning the piano requires patience and practise. She provides written notes from each lesson which are invaluable and I feel inspired to keep going when finding playing challenging.”
Fantastic tutor and gifted musician
“I have always wanted to learn how to play piano, and on meeting Lucy at an event I finally decided to give it a go. Lucy is a gifted musician and a fantastic tutor; her expertise and relaxed but focussed teaching style have already given me the confidence to play two handed after just a few lessons and I enjoy it every week. Her confidence in me at every stage is evident and motivating, as is her love of piano. Learning a new skill like this can be daunting, but Lucy makes it accessible and enjoyable :)”
